About Me & Counselling

My Background

Before I became a counsellor I spent many years working in the care sector. This included working within palliative care, secure mental health units, elderly care and education. Through gaining this experience it became apparent how those who were struggling with everyday life really needed someone to listen to them in a safe, non-judgmental, empathetic environment.

To explore this more I went on to become involved in various charities, from supporting clients that were in deep distress and suicidal to working with families under extreme pressures. My experience has allowed me to work with clients with relationship/family issues, depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, addiction, bereavement issues, anger management etc. I got so much satisfaction from this that I decided on pursuing a career in counselling as it was something I felt extremely passionate about and so I began my training.

After qualifying as a counsellor I went on to carry out extensive training in areas that dealt with loss and grief, and I worked for a large charity as a bereavement counsellor, gaining valuable experience. I went on to take an Advanced Certficate In Life Coaching so that I could assist my clients with having a more positive life style.

I have an up to date Disclosure and Barring services Certificate, which allows me to work with vulnerable adults.

I am a fully qualified registered counsellor with the International Society of Psychotherapy and Counselling. I adhere and abide to the ethical framework and I hold a full indemnity professional insurance policy.

How I Work

We are all unique so what may work for one client may be different for another so I tend to combine different schools of counselling including 'The person-centred approach' alongside some cognitive behavioural therapy. I will adapt my skills and experience to what would benefit the client mostly on their journey.

I may also incorporate some 'Life Coaching' as I feel this can assist the individual or couple with moving on.

What is Person Centred Therapy?

Counsellors using the person-centred approach work to offer clients an understanding approach that is non -judgemental, open and full of empathy. The counsellor facilitates the process by asking questions and helping the client clarify what they think and how they feel. Research has shown this process is effective for a wide range of problems and issues.

It is often popular among clients who enjoy the freedom to talk about things they wish in a context that is supportive and facilitative, rather than those wishing very specific techniques or tips to manage things.

Person Centred Therapy helps the client to accept themselves and rediscover strengths and resources they may have forgotten they had.

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

CBT focuses on the idea that how we think about certain situations can affect the way we feel and behave towards them. If you were to view a situation negatively, you may well experience negative emotions because of the thoughts you are having.

There are many different forms of negative thinking which once you become more aware you will be able to focus more from the rational mindset then the emotional one by looking for factual evidence your thoughts are correct.

CBT works very much in the here and now rather than focusing on the past, goals are encouraged that are achievable and manageable.
